This could be the case when you compare the Performax 1632 open ended drum sander with the Ryobi WDS-1600. Here are some recapped author comments and thoughts from the Wood Magazine review of August 1996.
1. Mating surfaces between critical components are bettermachined on the Performax than the Ryobi unit. The Performax is made in Minnesota USA and the Ryobi is made in Taiwan
2. Adjusting the conveyor tension and setting the sanding drum parallel to the conveyor was easy and straight forward on the Performax. The Ryobi adjustments proved to be a difficult task.
3. Once adjusted, the Ryobi sanding head did not elevate with the ease of the Performax.
4. The Ryobi sand paper retaining clips looked similar to the ones on the Performax, but were harder to access and operate.
The author of the Wood Magazine article had difficulty securely fastening abrasives under 80 grit on the Ryobi. This was no problem on the Performax. For complete details get a copy of the Wood Magizine August 1996 issue
Bottom Line: The Performax unit sanded excellent with basic machine adjustments. The Ryobi unit needed much more time consuming adjustments to get close to the Performax tolerance.
