Wood and Metalworking Machine Basics Editorial Product Review

by Bob DeLucas

The Delta 50-850 is a recent entry into the single stage Dust Collector market. Delta rates the 50-850 at 1200 CFM air flow, 1-1/2 HP. The following comparison shows some interesting test results.

NOTE: Concerning the 50-850 motor that Delta rates at 1-1/2 HP. Delta's 14" closed stand bandsaw draws 13.4 Amps at 115 volts and is rated at 1HP. JET's 650 CFM, 1HP dust collector draws 11.5 Amps at 115 volts. The Delta 50-850 motor going by Amps draw of 12 Amps, puts it closer to 1HP.

* JET does not recommend any motor 2HP and up be run on 115 voltage (only 230 volt - large HP motors draw less Amps, run cooler and last longer at 230 volts).

This test comparison shows that the Delta 50-850 has a smaller motor, a smaller diameter fan blade, less CFM (960 in this test) and is 43 lbs. lighter than the JET DC-1200. But the Delta's 50-850 is cheaper, so I guess the old adage is true, you get what you pay for.

Now the Challenge:

If Delta questions our test results and is willing to do a similar test comparing the JET DC-1200 stock #708622 to their 50-850 dust collector I'll be happy to put it up on this web site for all to read. Stay tuned!!

** It would be nice if one of the major wood magazines would pick up on this and do an independent test.

The last rating we had for the Delta 50-850 was approx. 960 CFM which would put it more intor the class with JET's DC-1100. Both power and price wise.
